It's that time of year…Prom 2009 | Evie Curley, Greensboro Photographer

Ahhhh. Springtime. The scent of honeysuckle is heavy in the air, the trees have grown lush with leaves after being bare all winter long and the time is ripe for that age old custom known as – Prom. It’s a rite of passage for many high school students. For some it is full of excitement and glamour. For others, its weeks of angst worrying about dates, hairdos, dresses, party plans, and the list goes on. When I was in high school I was “lucky” enough to attend the junior and senior proms. Junior prom was a last minute invitation by the boy I had just begun dating but it was a lot of fun getting all dolled up and going out for the night. His mom took pictures of us that night and those are the only ones I have. They all pretty much look like this:

Yes, the good old red eye syndrome, ever-present in every photograph. How do you like that large-and-in-charge 80′s hair? Yeah baby! The next year, this boy and I were still dating and we went to Senior Prom. We have pictures from both sets of parents but this one…this one is my favorite. Get ready to feast your eyes on the best prom picture of all time!!!

Do you know, when his mother saw these pictures, she screamed and cried at him because his eyes were closed? How in the world could the poor boy have helped that?? It didn’t matter that she had taken a million of her own photos and that my parents had taken a million to boot. She was HACKED that this particular picture looked like – ahem, poop.

Thankfully, kids have other options today. Today’s prom photographer is probably shooting digital so the eyes-closed shots are less common I would think. In addition, kids can get together and get group shots done at their home by a professional. This weekend, a friend of mine invited me to take pictures of her daughter and 13 of her closest friends before prom. I didn’t get many because I didn’t want to intrude on the other parents trying to get photos of their own kids but I did get a couple that I really liked.

I can’t put my finger on exactly why I like this one so much but, I just do:

And this one is my absolute fave of the whole bunch. It has a Rat Pack kind of feel to it and I really dig it.

It’s too bad there wasn’t enough time because I had a lot of really cool and fun ideas to shoot. There’s always next year!!

Hope all is well in your world!

OMW those first couple are funny! Not BAD funny, just strange how fashion changes and how these styles are coming back in! Do I hazard a guess that the first one was circa ’83/’84 or am I way off base?
Love the two you took and yes, have to agree the one of the boys is fabu! They certainly do look ‘rat-pack’-ish!

Karen Johnson - - 4:27 am

This is a fun story, love your old prom photos, mine look about the same, but no closed eyes. The ones you took are charming, I love the feel of both of them. The first gives me a feeling of peeking in on the group and it feels warm and fun. The second one looks like a magazine ad for the tux company :-)

Manuella - - 1:18 pm

A Day At the Zoo | Greensboro, NC Photographer, Evie Curley

So last week, my sister invited me and the boys and my mom to tag along with her and her daughter on a quick little jaunt down to the Asheboro Zoo. It had been a long time since we last visited so of course we were up for the trip! It was a nice day to go, the skies were a bit overcast and the temperature was low. It was so low that we ended up having to buy hoodies for Ryan and Makena to wear! We saw so many animals this time around, I think in part because the temps were perfect and it was early. Here are a few of my pics from the trip:

I have to tell you, our experience at the Chimpanzee Observatory was pretty amazing.  This fellow was sitting right in front of us and just stared back at us through the glass, looking at each one of us.  My sister smiled and nodded her head at him and he nodded back!  Then we noticed another chimpanzee coming up and my sister pointed in it’s direction.  Our friend turned his head to see what she was pointing at!  I know that they are tremendously powerful animals but they are obviously very intelligent as well.

We had a great time together, all the kids got along great and my mom took us all out to lunch afterwards!  I doubt we’ll wait so long between visits next time.  Hope all is well in your world!
