So, in addition to the monthly Fine art Friday that I’m doing, a very dear friend of mine invited me to participate in a photo challenge centered around Valentine’s Day. Summer Lacey, a Grand Rapids, Michigan Photographer has challenged herself to do one Valentine’s themed macro shot a day for 14 days. I am going to participate but mine won’t all be macro shots. In fact, the first picture I’m posting was actually photographed with my 50mm lens. I’m not going to bombard you on the blog with 14 days of pictures and neither is Summer. We’ll be uploading the dailies to Facebook and then doing a couple of posts including groups of them on our blogs. If you’re not following me on Facebook, do it now!!! https://www.facebook.com/photographybyeviecurley Also participating in this challenge is Renee Whiting, a Santa Cruz, CA Photographer so be sure to check her out, too!! It’s going to be fun to see what we all do with this and between the three of us, we’ve got this covered from coast-to-coast!

This first image is of some Valentine’s Fudge that I saw on Pinterest. It was a super simple recipe so I thought I would give it a try: one package of strawberry frosting and one package of white chocolate chips (melted). Combine the two, pour into an 8×8 pan and let it set in the refrigerator. Once it’s set, you may use a cookie cutter to cut the desired shapes. Now, even though I’ve told you how to make it, DON’T. It actually tasted really gross, unless you like sickly sweet things!!! But it was pretty to photograph so, here you go!!

One of the challenges of doing something artistic for a living is that it is easy to forget to follow your passion, or do something that is totally for you utilizing your favorite pastime. For myself, I get so caught up in delivering images that clients ask for that I set aside my wishes to do something creative just for me. Well, recently a group of us on 4 the Love of Focus (4TLOF) a forum for professional women photographers, were discussing how we were inspired by Nichole Van and a group she had put together called Fine Art Photography. One of the ladies on our forum thought it would be fun if we did something like that so here we are! I’m excited about it because even though photography is an artform whether you do it commercially, photograph weddings or portraits, etc, it’s still fun to let your creative juices flow and do something that is a little outside the box. Once a month, we’ll all be posting a picture for Fine Art Friday and will include a link to the next person in our group who is participating. This month, I’m linking you to Jenn Duguay, Valleyview, Alberta Photographer so be sure to check her out and see her take on Fine Art Friday!!

Here is my image for this month. When I was in school and took art classes, one of my favorite things to draw was still lifes. I loved trying to capture something meaningful from the assortment of things my teacher had chosen for us to draw that day. So my image this month is based on that with a singular item in focus. It was a lot of fun to take this image and then play with it in photoshop until it achieved the feeling I was going for!!

I can’t help myself sometimes and just have to use pop culture references in my blog posts or titles. It’s FUN! In fact, if you know what I am referencing by using that title, I’d love it if you put it in the comments or emailed me!! It would be nice to know that I’m not the only one with a sense of humor like that.

But back to the reason for this post. Last November I entered an image competition being sponsored by the National Association of Professional Child Photographers (NAPCP). It is a group that I have been a member of since 2009 and they take the business of Child Photography very seriously. Anyway, I entered their competition in December of 2010 and had to wait two long months to find out whether I had even scored well enough to receive an honorable mention. Well, on February 7, 2011 the winners were announced and I won first place in the Tweens Category for this image:

Anyone who knows me is well acquainted with the fact that I DO NOT like to toot my own horn. It is something that I just don’t usually do so, please forgive me for doing it today. This was just too exciting to keep to myself. And you know what? I am not going to lie. It was INCREDIBLY exciting to read my name among some of the top photographers in the world!! And to know that this was won solely on merit almost made me have a Sally Field Oscar moment, “You like me!!!! You really like me!!!” (see there I go again….)

Anyway, thank you so much for your support and for sharing in this exciting news with me!! If you’d like to read the official press release, please click on this link: Greensboro Child Photographer

So, after a very long hiatus, I am finally back at work and ready to post LOTS of things for your enjoyment. First on my list is something that I am extremely excited about. I am a member of a really awesome community called, 4 the Love of Focus. It is an online forum for professional women photographers and it is such an incredible resource. If you haven’t heard of it, please check it out. The women there are really phenomenal and give amazing advice and support. Also, they are always cooking up some cool new thing to keep us on our artistic toes. As a photographer who shoots images for others, it is easy to feel like what *you* want is being pushed aside or ignored by the business aspect of things. That is just the nature of it because you are shooting for other people! So, the ladies over at 4TLOF came up with this awesome project to help us feel good about the pictures we take. It is called My World/Your World and involves different themes and photographers partnering up to demonstrate the weekly vision. My partner is a very talented (and super sweet) photographer named, Stephanie Newbold. Stephanie is a Tuscon, AZ Child and Family Photographer with a great eye and I was happy to partner with her on this monthly projects. Our theme this month is “black and white” and each of us had to take a photo that represented what those words meant to us. We then share it with the world on our blog each month. Well, you may think that we’d both do a black and white photo. And, I did consider that because to me, nothing is more emotive than a black and white image done well. But instead, Stephanie and I each chose to photograph things that ARE black and white. See for yourself:

I took a picture of my most favorite shoes in the world, my black and white Chuck Taylor knockoffs from Target. How do I love these shoes? Let me count the ways!! Seriously though, I wear them ALL the time and will be so sad when they finally give out on me. Stephanie took a much more appetizing approach by photographing a cupcake from a family recipe that she is generously sharing on her blog. So be sure to check it out at the link above!! Doesn’t that cupcake look amazing! I could go for one right now paired with a nice tall glass of milk. Mmmmm good!

Be sure to check back for more inspiring images to come. Stephanie and I are just getting started and can’t wait for the next month’s theme to roll around. Plus, come back and check the blog for some great offers I am going to be announcing soon. You will NOT want to miss out on that I can assure you!

Hope all is well in your world and that you are enjoying the new year!

The beach has long been my favorite place to vacation. The smell of the salt-kissed sea air, the feeling of wet sand between my toes, being lulled to sleep by the sounds of the waves…these are all things that bring me back to the beach whenever I can make it happen. This year, we took a week-long vacation at North Topsail Island, a relatively remote stretch of beach on the NC Coast and it was wonderful! My sister and her family also came with us and we had a really good time. Every day we would take strolls along the sandy beach looking for interesting sea shells and we were never disappointed. In fact, one day we came across a tremendous number of hermit crabs which was fascinating! I had never seen them anywhere but the beach supply store! Anyway, we were able to relax and enjoy each other’s company as well as watch our children go toe-to-toe with the sea on a daily basis.

It’s hard to imagine but, I hadn’t taken a vacation at the beach in three years. We have been spending time visiting family and taking trips to Disney World instead. One of the thoughts that crossed my mind was, “Man, I wish I could do a family shoot at the beach!” Well, guess what? I got to do exactly that. We met an awesome family that was staying in the house next to ours. They happened to be from Cary which isn’t too far from Greensboro. Our boys all spent quite a bit of time together and I had the great pleasure of spending time with their parents. One day as their mom, Lisa, and I were talking, she brought up the fact that they had tried to find a photographer to take their family portrait while they were there but was unsuccessful in her quest. I thought about it for a bit and went over later and offered to take their pics for them. It was incredibly serendipitous that they would need photos and I was dying to shoot some! Here are a few of my faves from that day:

This one is seriously one of my faves. I just feel like I’m really seeing their personalities in this shot!

Now, here is one I took of my niece and, hopefully, I don’t sound too braggy because I love, love, love this pic of her. She always makes very funny faces when she poses for me, which is awesome because that’s who she is. This shot just demonstrates how beautiful and adorable she is, too. LOVE IT!

All in all, we had a great time at the beach. We did a lot of fun things and met some great people, too. It’s hard to get back into the swing of things after a vacation like that! But we’re back and I’m ready to take photos for all the great clients who have contacted me for sessions in October. The spots in October are filling up fast so, if you want to be sure you get a Holiday Session before the deadline in November, please don’t delay in contacting me! I hope all is well in your world!!

One of the beauties of being a homeschooling family is the convenience afforded to us when it is time to choose an annual vacation. In years past, we have gone to Disney World in Florida and have absolutely loved every moment. It’s an awesome place to travel with young children because Disney just makes it so easy!! This year though, the boys wanted to go somewhere different. They were feeling a bit tired of the usual Disney vacation and so we opted to head towards the Coast instead. We feel so fortunate to live where we do, it’s pretty much equidistant for us to travel to the mountains or the beach and, with homeschooling, we can travel in the off-season to make it more affordable and pleasant. We also invited my sister and her family to join us so we’ve been having a really great time! Here are a few of our pics so far. We’re only a few days into our trip and already I want to move here!!!

These first few pics were from a night out at a restaurant. Honestly, they act this silly at home, too….

My son is trying to make my husband cross-eyed. They think cross-eyes are hilarious.

My sister and my nephew. aren’t their faces awesome?!

And this was the gorgeous sunrise that greeted us this morning from the deck at the house where we’re staying. Before photography, I didn’t know how truly beautiful the sunrise was. I LOVE taking pictures at sunrise!!

Recently, my nephew was christened. The ceremony was held in a beautiful church here in Greensboro, Our Lady of Grace. It is a gorgeous place! And the light in there, while a bit dark, really was quite beautiful. My sister of course, wanted pictures from this very special occasion so I brought along my camera in order to capture this for them. What’s interesting is which image from the whole set is my favorite. While my nephew looked totally adorable in his little while suit that had been worn by his father and uncles before him, my favorite moment came when my husband nudged me and signaled for me to look to my right. This is what I saw:

My grandfather is 91 years old and we are so privileged to have him still be able to get around and attend these milestones with us, even if he does take a little nap from time-to-time. Years from now, we’ll be able to look at this picture and smile. Remembering how special it was to have him there, how peaceful he looked as he dozed during the service. This is why I do what I do. So you will be able to look through your photos and your albums and feel thankful to have captured a moment in time. That’s exactly what it’s about. Moments like these that are fleeting. Even if you don’t ever have a professional photograph taken in your life, be sure to just take your camera with you everywhere and capture the people you love so you always have them with you. :)

I’m going to do something a little bit unusual today and not talk about my own work for once. Instead, I’m going to talk about Marcy Roan, a photographer in High Point that I had the pleasure of working with the night of my studio opening in April. You see, my studio opening coincided with an event in Downtown Greensboro called First Friday and one of the goals of First Friday is to help promote local artists. The folks that head up the Downtown Greensboro organization put me in contact with Marcy and we hit it off right away. It’s nice to pick up the phone and have a conversation with someone where it feels like you’ve known each other for years. We worked out the details and Marcy was excited to be able to display her beautiful photographs at the studio and I’d like to share them with you here.

You should see them in person because they are truly beautiful and evocative! If you are interested in purchasing any of these images, please contact Marcy via email at marcy@marcyroanphotography.com. She is also displaying some of her work in Durham this summer so be sure to keep an eye out for that as well!

This time of year is pretty amazing. It seems as though we go from having totally naked trees to seeing them in their full-blown regalia in a matter of a few days. And this time of year never fails to inspire me to get out and shoot some photos, just for myself. :) It used to be that my boys would easily oblige me and we could trek out where ever and take some photos. Not so much these days. Thankfully, I have a niece who is happy to model for me and allow me to scratch my photography itch when I feel like doing something a little bit different.

This weekend, I’m heading down to visit a friend and take some awesome photos around the charming, historic city of Savannah, GA. When I get back, I will be sure to share pics from our adventures as well as some pics from the night of the studio opening. Please have a wonderful and safe weekend and I hope the weather is beautiful where ever you are!!

It takes 9 months for a baby to fully develop but, our family has been waiting much, much longer than that for our newest member to arrive. My sister and her husband decided a couple of years ago that they wanted to add another little chick to their brood but things never happen the way we think or intend them to. They have their own timeline to follow and my nephew, Matthew was born on March 10th weighing 8lbs 13 oz.

We all got to the hospital Wednesday morning and waited to see my brother-in-law appear at the nursery window holding his son. It seemed to take forever…

But it was only 15 minutes after we got there that we got to meet Matthew Jameson!

His big sister was very proud and couldn’t wait until a big piece of glass didn’t separate them anymore!

While Matthew’s mom was in the recovery room, his daddy kept him company and looked at him with awe and wonder.

Welcome to the world, Matthew! We couldn’t be happier to finally meet you!!

We’ll be holding his official newborn session one day this week. I can’t wait!!!

For a while now, a wanderlust has settled over me and it made me want to live somewhere other than the South. I’d love to pack up my kids and move to Europe or New Zealand. That would be ideal! But, with my husband’s job, it’s much more likely that we would move somewhere stateside (if at all), and until recently I was of the mind set that up North was where I’d like to be. See, a few years ago, my husband took me on a trip to New England and I fell in love with the crisp air and the surrounding landscape. The rocky beaches and tidal pools at Kennebunk, the cool shops in Portland, all the covered bridges. I could just imagine it all in Winter and living in the South means that we really don’t experience Fall and Winter like the upper part of the country. Until this week. This week, all the snow we’ve had here has really been a salve that has soothed the burning desire I had to move. Not to say that the snow hasn’t been fun because we have absolutely had a blast in it! We went sledding the other day and it was more fun than I can even begin to describe!! The best thing about the snow was it happened over a weekend and my husband was able to enjoy it with us. It’s always nicer for me when he’s around, too. The thing is, I only like it for a day or so and this little flirtation with snow this week has clued me in to the fact that I think the fantasy of a snowy winter season is much more appealing to me than the reality!! LOL

They’re predicting more snow for us this weekend, or ice which would be awful. And all of this cold weather has lead me to the conclusion that I really am a Southern girl in my bones. Weather-wise at least. ;) I don’t think I would survive a winter up north though I am happy to visit and appreciate the beauty while I’m there. At any rate, I cannot end this post without sharing a few of our photos from our big snow event. I swear, I probably gained 5 lbs because of all the eating and baking I did while we were stuck indoors! Anyway, enjoy!!!

Yesterday’s announcement from Apple regarding the iPad prompted me to write this post today. You see, my husband has long been into all the latest gadgets. In fact, he spends some of his time inventing some, although they never see the light of day. I won’t be at all surprised if we end up with an iPad at some point this year. Well, I’m not really that into gadgets unless they have something to do with photography and then I’m interested. But he has passed his fascination on to our boys. They are totally into video games and are always looking to take things to the next level. Their interest in playing these things does ebb and flow and but recently, they have been on a kick. All three of them have! Take a look for yourself.

Here is what I saw when I went in to check on them the other night. The house had gotten very quiet, which all moms know could be a bad sign, so I proceeded to investigate the source of the silence. In times past I have found one of my kids writing on the wall, another was giving himself tattoos with magic marker. What I found this night both entertained me and warmed my heart. I love seeing my husband hanging out with the boys.

They all have their technology of choice……

And they each were intently focused on whatever they were playing.

And every so often they would check out the awesome feats that one of them had accomplished:

There are times when I wish that my kids were more into books because that is something I enjoy but they really just can’t get into reading for pleasure. Instead, I find joy in the fact that for even a few moments, they can sit and play games with their dad, and just accept that this is one thing that they are really into. I need to try and be more into it for their sake.

So, have you figured out where the title of this post came from? It’s one of my favorite movies….I thought it was dynamite!

First person with the correct answer will get a $10 gift card to Starbucks!!

Happy New Year to you all! Did you have a big celebration or did you ring in the new year while you were sleeping? We spent New Year’s at with my sister and her husband and my niece and had a wonderful time. We played board games with the kids for a while and then we watched the movie, “The Hangover” until it was time for Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest to come on. A side note here, I loved the movie. Perhaps I’m giving away too much about how twisted my sense of humor is but, honestly, I laughed until I couldn’t breathe. I’m a big fan of Old School, Wedding Crashers, and Anchorman, too though. Anyway, we had a great time and stayed up way too late. The next day, I woke up with the WORST crick in my neck and it’s still there. Not as bad as it was but I haven’t wanted to be on the computer too much!! Hopefully it will go away this week. On January 1st, we had the traditional ham, black-eyed peas, and collard greens in the hopes that it will bring us good fortune, good luck, and good health this year. I’m not a big fan of black-eyed peas or collards but will eat them once a year!!

I’m kind of sad that the holidays are winding down. It has been really nice having my husband around so much and the boys have certainly enjoyed seeing him as much as they have. Tomorrow is going to feel like a big shock when I look over at Sean’s chair during the day and he’s not sitting in it! It can’t last forever though and gives us something to look forward to next year. :)

Even though the last couple of weeks were a “vacation” for me, I did spend some time working. I know, that’s naughty, but I wanted to put the final touches on my new plan for 2010 and I am SO EXCITED to finally be able to tell you all about it!! 2009 was a great year for me. I met a lot of awesome families and I learned more than I can possibly express. It was my journey through 2009 that brought me to where I am today with my new plan. For 2010, I’m going digital. Yep. You read that right, my main focus is giving you all the usable digital files from our session. All of my main Collections include every edited image from your session with me. At the very least it will be 20 images but likely there will be many more than that. This is something that many professional photographers are loathe to part with, and understandably so. It can be scary thinking that someone out there has the files and might edit them on their own and THEN claim that the professional photographer did it. However, I know that the people who come to me, do so because they like the work they have seen me do on my site and just want the digital files so they may order as many prints as they want for themselves and their families without spending a fortune doing so.

Also included in my collections this year are Fine Art Edits. These are prints that I have paid special attention to and will look like a work of art that you will want to hang on your wall. In the next few days, I will have a special Fine Art Gallery added to the Gallery Links at the top of the page so you can see what I’m talking about.

I am incredibly excited to offer my clients every usable image from their session. It has been hard for me to go through and judge whether a client will like one expression better than another and I’m so happy to have found a way to offer all the files to you.

If you are interested in knowing more about my 2010 Pricing, please give me a call at 336-285-8341 or send me an email at evie@eviecurleyphotography.com. I’m working on posting all the details as far as pricing goes on the web and there will be more details posted later this week under the Information tab above.

Oh, and here’s a peek at something I will be posting about later this week!!! I have a special offer to make and it has something to do with this!!

Back in October, my family and my sister’s family traveled up the road a bit to our lovely NC mountains and did some apple picking. I must confess, the apple picking place was not what I thought it would be. I had visions of a glorious orchard, branches swollen with apples just waiting for us to come by and save them. I was just a teensy bit disillusioned by the fact that the orchard was really on a patch of grass behind something that looked like a gas station. Not quite the photo op I had in mind but, no matter. There were apples galore and we gathered up as many as our baskets and our wagon would carry. I also snapped a couple of shots that I’d like to share with you. You will notice that I have been getting artsy again. It’s a lot of fun and I plan to incorporate this into my business next year!! Without further adieu, here is my youngest holding an apple that was HUGE, GINORMOUS!

And then my oldest, not to be outdone by his younger brother scoured the ground until he found one as big as a planet, too.

There is something to be said for taking your children to a place where they can see that food actually comes from nature. It was nice to see them get excited about seeing apples actually growing on trees. Eventually, we made our way down the road a bit more and came across a bit more picturesque apple orchard but, by that time it was raining and I couldn’t get my camera out. For Christmas this year, we’re planning to drive back up to the mountains and cut down our own tree. Hopefully, I will have some photos to share of that as well!

Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

This time of year is my absolute favorite. The changing of the leaves, the transition from summer temps to the gentle temps of Fall, and the knowledge that very soon the holidays will be here and everyone is a little bit nicer to one another during that time. You know, here in the South it takes a little bit longer for the temps to change and for Fall to set in. Usually we have pretty warm days all through November! Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day and we’ll be heading to my sister’s house to enjoy the feast that she is so generously preparing for our whole family this year. She always puts out quite the Thanksgiving spread and we look forward to going there and stuffing ourselves as much as the turkey. :) This year, I have been particularly mindful of the fact that I have a lot to be thankful for. My husband has a good job, my children are healthy, we live in a comfortable (albeit not fancy!) home, and we have lots of family and friends nearby. I have felt really blessed this year to have met so many wonderful people through my business and through my online associations with other photographers. It has, in spite of the trying times experienced by our nation, still been a good year in many ways. My family doesn’t get to do the things like we used to because we feel the pinch just as anyone else does. That hasn’t affected our spirits though and our determination to enjoy the things we do have and to say thanks for that.

Thank you to my friends for making this such a bountiful year. I feel as though I have so many good friends to turn to when things get hard and in that way I am wealthy beyond all imagination. Thank you to my clients for allowing me to capture your memories for you and I hope that you will entrust that to me again next year.

So tomorrow, when I’m sitting at the table enjoying a heaping serving of this delicious Southern delicacy known as Cornbread Dressing:

I hope you are enjoying something equally delicious as well as enjoying it with family and friends. :)

I hope that everyone has a safe, happy, delicious, Thanksgiving!

I took a dress out for a photo shoot today. You can stop rubbing your eyes because you did indeed read that correctly. Today, I took a dress over to a cool little spot and got several shots of it. It is ADORABLE! Last year, I got together with a couple of my photographer friends and we went antique store hopping. It was a lot of fun and while we were there, I spotted this beautifully embroidered pillowcase. After seeing some that had been turned into dresses for little girls, I knew immediately that this one would be perfect for that. Well, I didn’t get around to it until last night, and even then a friend of mine is the one who did all the sewing but…check this out….

Isn’t it just the cutest, sweetest little dress? I can’t wait to put someone in it and take some photos!! As it is I had to take several of the dress because I just love it so! Here are a couple more!

I also picked up a couple of parasols that I’m dying to take pics of someone with. My son was walking around with one but he wasn’t exactly hip to have his picture taken with it…

Now, the spot where I took all these photos has been exclusively offered to me for photo shoots. It’s a darling little yard with tons of vignettes from which to take many, many photos. This is very exciting and if you’d like to have your child’s portraits done in this dreamy little location, give me a call and we’ll get something set up right away. My mind was going a million miles a minute with visions of all the pictures that could be taken there!!

I hope all is well in your world!!

After offering very affordable digital collections for the Holiday Season, I have one more thing to do in the vein of giving back. Check this out.

You know someone. You know someone who’s experienced a tragedy, is struggling to stay afloat, is raising kids while holding down more than one job, or is volunteering selflessly despite extenuating personal circumstances. You know someone who can’t afford custom photography, but who would cherish it this holiday season. You know someone who deserves a year-round reminder of their family’s spirit, love, and beauty.

You know someone. I guarantee it.

I want to know who they are, and I want to give them the chance to experience complimentary custom photography — over a $1000 worth!!!! The winner will receive a complimentary photo session and a high-resolution disc of all the images from their gallery.

Oh, and the best part? The person who nominates the winner receives a $250 print credit. What better reason to show some love could there possibly be, people?

The rules:

* You cannot nominate yourself, and the person nominated must sincerely be incapable of purchasing my services. (Being unable to make mortgage payments for a two-million-dollar-vacation-home in Paris does not qualify as sincere financial need.)

* The nominee must reside in North Carolina and be within a 70 mile radius of 27410 zip code. Tell me who you know, what they’re experiencing, and why they deserve my artwork. Please include a way to contact both your nominee and yourself as well.

* You must e-mail me the full story :evie@eviecurleyphotography.com

*ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE IN BY DECEMBER 14th!!!

The winner will be announced on Christmas Eve — get nominating! I can’t wait to read all of your entries!

Open your heart to someone this holiday season — and thanks for giving me the opportunity to open mine.

With love,

Evie

Whew. I am B-E-A-T!!!! This past weekend, we took a little jaunt up to Pennsylvania to visit my husband’s brother and family. We had a great time, as we do every year, and the time goes by way too fast. We drove back today and after 8 hours of being in the car with two kids jacked up on Twinkies and Cheetos, I’m ready for a bit of a nap.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of traveling to PA, you really should make it one of the places on your “must see” list. It’s truly beautiful, verdant, and has incredible landscapes. The rolling hills and wide vistas will absolutely take your breath away! Of course, I don’t have any photos of that. LOL I know, I know. Bad. Very BAD! I did get some great photos of the kids while we were there and here is one I can share with you today. It was actually taken at a place called, “Foamhenge” in Natural Bridge, VA. You can read more about it HERE. The artist went to great lengths to be sure that his Styrofoam model was an exact replica of its British cousin, Stonehenge. Aside from the biting flies that were swarming us once we reached the top, it was a pretty cool experience. Especially since I’m not sure I will ever see the real thing. So here it is for you in all its Styrofoam glory…Foamhenge!!!
